Q.1 A. Read the extract and complete the activities given below: [12 Marks]

A few days after, my most sensitive toe was trampled on rather heavily as I sat reading on the top of a bus. I looked up with some anger and more agony, and saw my friend of the cheerful countenance. “Sorry, sir,” he said. “I know these are heavy boots. Got’ em because my own feet get trod on so much, and now I’m treading on other people’s. Hope I didn’t hurt you, sir.” He had hurt me but he was so nice about it that I assured him he hadn’t. After this I began to observe him whenever I boarded his bus, and found a curious pleasure in the constant good-nature of his bearing. He seemed to have an inexhaustible fund of patience and a gift for making his passengers comfortable. I noticed that if it was raining he would run up the stairs to give someone the tip that there was “room inside”. With old people he was as considerate as a son, and with children as solicitous as a father.

He had evidently a peculiarly warm place in his heart for young people, and always indulged in some merry jest with them. If he had a blind man on board it was not enough to set him down safely on the pavement. He would call to Bill in front to wait while he took him across the road or round the corner, or otherwise safely on his way. In short, I found that he irradiated such an atmosphere of good-temper and kindliness that a journey with him was a lesson in natural courtesy and good manners.

What struck me particularly was the ease with which he got through his work. If bad manners are infectious, so also are good manners.

A1) Match the column: (02)

According to the passage the bus conductor used to help a needy person in difficulties. Group A indicates type of the person and group B indicates behavior of bus conductor. Match column with group A and B.

A2) Describe: (02)

Describe the humble reaction of the bus conductor when he trampled the toe of writers.

Solution
When the bus conductor trampled the writer's toe, he immediately apologized with a cheerful countenance. He explained that he wore heavy boots because his own feet often got trod on, and he hoped he hadn't hurt the writer. He was so nice and apologetic about it that the writer assured him he wasn't hurt.

A3) Analysis: (02)

Explain the given statement with the help of extract.
‘A journey with him was a lesson in natural courtesy and good manners.’

Solution
The conductor possessed an inexhaustible fund of patience and a genuine desire to make passengers comfortable. He was considerate to the old, solicitous to children, jested with the young, and helped the blind. He irradiated such an atmosphere of good temper and kindliness that simply observing his behavior taught passengers how to be naturally courteous.

A4) Personal Response: (02)

Give your opinion on the given statement with the help of any incident in your life.
By using Sweet words one can overcome the many problems.

Solution
I completely agree. Sweet and polite words act as a lubricant in the machinery of life. When we speak kindly, even in a tense situation, it disarms the other person and reduces anger. For example, once I accidentally bumped into a stranger; instead of arguing, I politely apologized, and we ended up smiling at each other. Politeness turns potential conflict into cooperation.

SECTION II – POETRY

(POETRY AND APPRECIATION)

Q.3.A. Read the extract and complete the activities given below: [10 Marks]

Much have I thought of life, and seen How poor men’s hearts are ever light; And how their wives do hum like bees About their work from morn till night. So, when I hear these poor ones laugh, And see the rich ones coldly frown Poor men, think I, need not go up So much as rich men should come down. When I had money, money, O! My many friends proved all untrue; But now I have no money, O! My friends are real, though very few.

A1) True or False: (02)

State whether the given sentences true or false according to theme of given extract.

(a) Poet, when he was rich had many true friends.
(b) Poor man is happy with their earning.
(c) Rich person celebrate the happiness with bottom of heart.
(d) In poverty, poet gained true friends.

Solution
(a) False (Friends proved all untrue when he was rich).
(b) True (Poor men's hearts are ever light/happy).
(c) False (Rich ones coldly frown).
(d) True (Now I have no money... friends are real).

A2) Give Description: (02)

Describe the life of poor man depicted in the given extract.

Solution
The poet depicts the poor man's life as surprisingly happy. Despite having little money, their "hearts are ever light." They laugh freely, and their wives are busy and active, humming like bees about their work from morning till night, indicating a life of content activity rather than misery.

A3) Personal Response: (02)

‘Real happiness is connected with satisfaction, not with money.’
Justify the given sentence in your words with proper example.

Solution
Money can buy temporary luxuries and comfort, but it brings the fear of losing it and attracts fake friends. Real happiness comes from peace of mind and satisfaction with what one has. A poor man who is satisfied sleeps better than a rich man who is constantly worried about his wealth. Therefore, contentment is the key to happiness.

A4) Poetic Device: (02)

The rhyme scheme is: a b c b (seen, light, bees, night).

Real happiness dwells in mind,
………………………one can find.

Peace and joy one can find.
Money can’t give us true happiness,
Spread the message of kindness.

B. APPRECIATION: (04)

Read the extract and write as per the instruction.

His eye was on the Inchcape float; Quoth he, “My men, put out the boat, And row me to the Inchcape Rock, And I’ll plague the Abbot of Aberbrothok’. The boat is lower’d, the boatmen row, And to the Inchcape Rock they go; Sir Ralph bent over from the boat, And he cut the Bell from the Inchcape float. Down sunk the bell with a gurgling sound. The bubbles rose and burst around; Quoth Sir Ralph, ‘The next who comes to the Rock Won’t bless the Abbot of Aberbrothok.’

Write a poetic appreciation of above extract with the help of given points.

  1. Theme of poem
  2. Language/poetic devices used in poem.
  3. Message or moral in poem.
  4. Your opinion about the poem.
Solution

1. Theme of poem: The extract is from 'The Inchcape Rock' by Robert Southey. The theme revolves around the idea of "As you sow, so shall you reap." It depicts the malicious act of Sir Ralph the Rover cutting the warning bell placed by the Abbot to help sailors, simply out of jealousy and wickedness.

2. Language/poetic devices: The poem is a ballad written in a narrative style. The language is simple and old-fashioned (e.g., "Quoth"). Poetic devices used include Alliteration ("bubbles rose and burst"), Inversion ("Down sunk the bell"), and Imagery (visuals of the sinking bell). The rhyme scheme is aabb.

3. Message or moral: The moral is that crime recoils on the head of the doer. Those who dig a pit for others fall into it themselves. Sir Ralph cuts the bell to spite the Abbot, but eventually, this leads to his own doom.

4. Your opinion: I find this poem very powerful. It clearly distinguishes between good and evil. The rhythmic flow makes it easy to read, and the story teaches a timeless lesson about the consequences of jealousy and bad actions.

“Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.”

  • Clothes a first impression of man.
  • People are judged by clothes.
  • Behavior must be generous according clothes.
  • Value of people should be evaluated by behavior and attitude.
Solution

Clothes Mean Nothing Until Someone Lives in Them

It is often said that "clothes make the man," but in reality, clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them. Clothes are merely fabric and thread; they are the outer shell that creates a first impression. A suit might look professional, or a dress elegant, but they are lifeless on a hanger.

The true value of clothing comes from the person wearing them. It is the character, behavior, and attitude of the person that brings the clothes to life. A person might wear the most expensive brand, but if their behavior is rude or unkind, the clothes lose their charm. Conversely, a person in simple attire who acts with generosity and kindness shines brightly.

Therefore, while we should dress neatly as it reflects self-respect, we must remember that people should be evaluated by their behavior and attitude, not just their attire. It is the human spirit inside that defines the worth of what we wear.

Trees are the lungs of the earth. It is the duty of every person to act against the destruction of nature.
