Question 1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below:

At a corner of Sixth Avenue electric lights and cunningly displayed wares behind plateglass made a shop window attractive. Soapy took a stone and dashed it through the glass. People came running, round the corner, a policeman in the lead. Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass button...

... "No cop for you," said the waiter, with a voice like butter cakes and an eye like the cherry in the Manhattan cocktail. "Hey, Con!" Neatly upon his left ear on the callous pavement two waiters pitched Soapy. He arose, joint by joint, as a carpenter's rule opens, and dusted his clothes. Arrest seemed now but an elusive dream.

Suppose you are a manager of a hotel, a poor boy has taken dinner in the hotel and then he found, he has not enough money to pay the bill. Describe how you will react in the situation.

Solution:

If I were a manager, I would assess the situation calmly. Instead of handing him over to the police immediately, I would ask him to perform some chores in the kitchen or clean the tables to cover the cost of his meal. A2. Explain

The writer says, "I don't believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right." Explain.

Solution:

This statement emphasizes a proactive mindset. Instead of being paralyzed by the fear of making a wrong choice or waiting for the "perfect" moment, one should take action. Once a decision is made, the focus shifts to working hard and adapting strategies to ensure that the chosen path leads to a successful outcome. It highlights accountability and resilience over the pursuit of perfection.

A3. Give reasons

Ratan Tata decided to sell his passenger car business.

Solution:

Ratan Tata considered selling the passenger car business primarily because:

  • Poor Initial Performance: The launch of the Tata Indica in 1998 was met with a poor market response and failure in its first year, causing financial strain.
  • External Pressure: Many people and shareholders advised him to sell the division to cut losses.
A4. Personal Response

"Right decision at the right time is important for success." Express your opinion.

Solution:

I agree that timing is crucial in decision-making. While Ratan Tata's philosophy of "making decisions right" is inspiring, making an informed choice at an opportune moment often dictates the ease of the path to success. For instance, seizing a market opportunity before competitors or selling a declining asset before it loses value requires timing. However, life is unpredictable, so the ability to adapt (as Tata did) is equally important when timing fails.

A5. Grammar

Write a summary of the above extract with a suitable title with the help of the given points/hints: Ratan Tata's early career, early setback in passenger car business, his meeting with Bill Ford, his success in passenger car business, purchase of Ford's Land Rover and Jaguar.

Solution:

Ratan Tata: A Journey of Resilience

Ratan Tata began his career on the shop floor of Tata Steel and later attempted to revive NELCO. His ambitious launch of the Tata Indica in 1998 initially failed, leading him to consider selling the division to Ford. However, after a humiliating meeting with Bill Ford, who questioned his competence, Tata decided not to sell. He worked hard to make Tata Motors successful. Years later, in a turn of events, the Tata Group acquired the struggling Jaguar and Land Rover brands from Ford, turning them into profitable ventures.

SECTION II: POETRY

Question 3. (A) Read the extract "Song of the Open Road" and complete the activities:

A foot and light-hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me...
... Still here I carry my old delicious burdens, I carry them, men and women, I carry them, with me wherever I go, I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them in return.
A1. Web Diagram

Complete the web diagram about the qualities needed on the journey of life.

Solution:
Light-heartedness
Self-reliance
Qualities needed on the journey of life
Contentment
Determination
A2. Analysis

Analyse the line: "I asked not good fortune, I myself am good fortune."

Solution:

This line is a powerful expression of self-confidence and independence. The poet rejects the reliance on luck, fate, or external help ("good fortune"). Instead, he asserts that he is the creator of his own destiny. By saying "I myself am good fortune," he emphasizes that his success and happiness depend on his own actions, mindset, and capabilities.

A3. Personal Response

Explain the importance of a long path / road in man's life.

Solution:

A "long path" metaphorically represents the journey of life, full of experiences, struggles, and learning. It is important because it provides opportunities for growth. Walking a long path teaches patience, endurance, and resilience. It allows a person to meet different people, face various challenges, and ultimately discover their true self. Without the journey, the destination has little meaning.

A4. Poetic Device

Identify and explain the figure of speech in the line: "Still here I carry old delicious burdens."

Solution:

Figure of Speech: Paradox

Explanation: A burden is usually heavy and unpleasant, but the poet describes it as "delicious" (pleasant). This contradiction conveys the deeper meaning that he cherishes the memories and attachments of his past, even though they may be heavy to carry. He does not want to let them go.

A5. Poetic Creativity

Complete the given lines using your imagination.
There is no way leading back.
I move forward...

Solution:

There is no way leading back,
I move forward on the rightful track.
With hope in heart and vision clear,
I conquer the path without any fear.

(B) Appreciation

Write an appreciation of the poem "Have You Earned Your Tomorrow" by Edgar A. Guest.

Solution:

Title: Have You Earned Your Tomorrow
Poet: Edgar A. Guest

Theme: The central theme is the importance of kindness, helpfulness, and the impact of one's actions on others. It questions whether we have done enough good deeds today to deserve a future "tomorrow."

Poetic Devices & Language: The poem relies heavily on Interrogation (Rhetorical Questions) to provoke thought in the reader (e.g., "Is anybody happier because you passed his way?"). The language is simple, conversational, and uplifting. The rhyme scheme is generally AABB or CCAABB.

Values: It promotes values of altruism, empathy, friendliness, and social responsibility.

Solution:

Sujit: Hello friends, today we are discussing the importance of reading. I believe reading is the most fundamental way to gain knowledge. It opens up new worlds without us moving an inch.

Rohit: I agree, Sujit. But it's not just about stories. Reading non-fiction and newspapers keeps us updated with current affairs. It improves our vocabulary and communication skills significantly.

Kishor: True, but we must also consider the quality of reading. In the age of social media, people read short, unverified snippets. Deep reading of books enhances focus and critical thinking, which is missing nowadays.
