“When shall I get at him?” he asked, clenching his fist.
“In the next world,” answered the astrologer. “He died four months ago in a far-off town. You will never see any more of him.” The other groaned on hearing it. The astrologer proceeded:
“Guru Nayak-”
“You know my name!” the other said, taken aback.
“As I know all other things. Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say. Your village is two days’ journey due north of this town. Take the next train and be gone. I see once again great danger to your life if you go from home.” He took out a pinch of sacred ash and held it to him. “Rub it on your forehead and go home. Never travel southward again, and you will live to be a hundred.”
“Why should I leave home again?” the other said reflectively. “I was only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life if I met him.” He shook his head regretfully. “He has escaped my hands. I hope at least he died as he deserved.” “Yes,” said the astrologer. “He was crushed under a lorry.” The other looked gratified to hear it.
The place was deserted by the time the astrologer picked up his articles and put them into his bag. The green shaft was also gone, leaving the place in darkness and silence. The stranger had gone off into the night, after giving the astrologer a handful of coins.
It was nearly midnight when the astrologer reached home. His wife was waiting for him at the door and demanded an explanation. He flung the coins at her and said “Count them. One man gave all that.”
“Twelve and a half annas,” she said, counting. She was overjoyed. “I can buy some jaggery and coconut tomorrow. The child has been asking for sweets for so many days now. I will prepare some nice stuff for her.”
“The swine has cheated me! He promised me a rupee,” said the astrologer. She looked up at him. “You look worried. What is wrong?”
“Nothing.”
After dinner, sitting on the pyol, he told her “Do you know a great load is gone from me today? I thought I had the blood of a man on my hands all these years. That was the reason why I ran away from home, settled here, and married you. He is alive.”
She gasped. “You tried to kill him!”

My father travels on the late evening train
Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light
Suburbs slide past his unseeing eyes
His shirt and pants are soggy and his black raincoat
Stained with mud and his bag stuffed with books
Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age
fade homeward through the humid monsoon night.
Now I can see him getting off the train
Like a word dropped from a long sentence.
He hurries across the length of the grey platform,
Crosses the railway line, enters the lane,
His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward.

Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,
Eating a stale chapati, reading a book.
He goes into the toilet to contemplate
Man's estrangement from a man-made world.

Read the given extract and write the appreciation of the given poem based on the following aspects.

  • About the poet and the title
  • The theme
  • Poetic style, Language, poetic devices.
  • Special feature
  • Values
  • Your opinion about the poem
Answer: The poem ‘Father Returning Home’ is written by Dilip Chitre. It is an account of any old man who does the hard work for his family but leads a monotonous life where no one is there to take care of him, to converse with him or to understand his feelings.

The poet deals with the theme of man’s estrangement from a man-made word. It depicts dull, monotonous, exhausting and equally pitiable daily routine.

The poem consists of two stanzas of 12 lines each. It is written in free verse with no particular meter or rhyme scheme followed.

Probably the lack of rhythm is symbolic of the poet’s father’s uncared-for life. The language is easy and simple but full of symbolic expressions and poetic devices like simile.

It is in first person narrative where the poet-speaker narrates how his father returns home and what he does thereafter.

I think the new generation should communicate with the old people. There are many things to learn from them. They should not be alienated but should be taken care.

Solution (Statement of Purpose):

Statement of Purpose

To The Admission Committee,

For as long as I can remember, the stage has been my second home. From mimicking television characters as a toddler to leading my school’s drama club for three consecutive years, my life has revolved around the art of expression. I am writing to express my sincere interest in the Diploma in Dramatic Arts at your prestigious academy.

While I have actively participated in inter-collegiate street plays and won the 'Best Actor' award at the district level last year, I realize that raw talent needs to be chiseled by technical expertise. I specifically wish to join your academy because of your focus on 'Method Acting' and your alumni list, which includes stalwarts of Indian cinema.

I possess the discipline required for rehearsals and the vulnerability required for performance. Admission to your academy would provide me with the professional grooming necessary to turn my passion into a meaningful career in the performing arts.

(3) Group Discussion :
Imagine that you have recently discussed with your friends on ‘Addiction of Mobile Games’, write the same discussion in the form of dialogues that you have experienced. Write suitable dialogues for each participant giving his/her opinion on the given topic.

Solution (Group Discussion):

Topic: Addiction of Mobile Games
Participants: Evaluator, Amit, Sara, and Rohan.

Evaluator: You may proceed with the discussion.

Amit: Hello friends. Today's topic is quite serious. In my opinion, mobile game addiction is becoming a silent pandemic. I see students playing PUBG and Free Fire for 6 to 7 hours a day, completely neglecting their studies and health.

Sara: I agree with Amit. It’s not just about time; it’s about mental health. Many violent games make children aggressive. They stop interacting with family members and live in a virtual bubble. The lack of physical activity is leading to obesity in teenagers.

Rohan: I beg to differ slightly. While addiction is bad, we cannot blame the games entirely. Mobile games also improve reflexes, strategic thinking, and teamwork if played within a limit. It is a good stress buster after long study hours.

Amit: That is a valid point, Rohan, but the problem is the 'limit'. Most teenagers lack the self-control to stop after one hour. The game developers design it to be addictive.

Sara: Exactly. Therefore, I conclude that while gaming is okay as a hobby, strict parental control and self-discipline are necessary to prevent it from becoming a dangerous addiction.

Solution (Speech):

Topic: The Gift of Life - Blood Donation

Honourable Principal, respected teachers, and my dear friends.

I am here today to speak about a noble cause that transcends all barriers of caste and creed—‘Blood Donation’.

As we all know, blood is the essence of life. Science has advanced greatly, but we still cannot manufacture blood in a factory; it can only come from a generous human being. Every drop you donate can be the difference between life and death for accident victims, cancer patients, or those undergoing surgery.

To facilitate this, our college has organized a ‘Blood Donation Camp’ on 1st June 2021 in the College Assembly Hall from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

I urge all of you who are eligible (above 18 years) to step forward. Donating blood stimulates the production of new blood cells and maintains good health. Let us become heroes in real life. Remember, you don't have to be a doctor to save a life; you just need a big heart.

Thank you.

The proverb "A friend in need is a friend indeed" serves as the ultimate litmus test for true friendship. In our lives, we meet many people. We laugh with them, party with them, and share our happy moments. These are often 'fair-weather friends' who stay with us only when the sun is shining.

However, a true friend is someone who stands by you when the world walks out. When you are in trouble, facing financial loss, or going through emotional trauma, a fake friend will make excuses and disappear. But a genuine friend will offer help, share your burden, and provide emotional support without expecting anything in return.

Friendship is not just about tagging each other on social media; it is about real care and devotion. Like the mythological friendship of Krishna and Sudama, or Karna and Duryodhana, true friendship is selfless. Therefore, we should value those who help us during our difficult times, for they are our greatest treasures.

Film Review: 3 Idiots

Title: 3 Idiots
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Cast: Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, and Boman Irani.

Plot:
"3 Idiots" is a masterpiece that combines comedy with a strong social message. The story revolves around three engineering students—Rancho, Farhan, and Raju—and their journey through the immense pressure of the Indian education system. It highlights the conflict between following one's passion versus succumbing to parental and societal expectations.

Review:
The film is a rollercoaster of emotions. It makes you laugh uncontrollably in one scene and cry in the next. Aamir Khan shines as Rancho, the genius who challenges the rote-learning system. Boman Irani is brilliant as the strict director, 'Virus'.

The music is soulful, especially "Give me some sunshine." The movie teaches us that "Success follows excellence," not the other way around. It is a must-watch for every student and parent.

(B) Answer the following questions in about 50 words : (4)

(1) Fernman brought a comic relief in the Students’ Council Programme. Explain.
(2) Give a brief character sketch of Denham.

Answer: (1) A comic relief is an element which provides humour in a serious situation. The half-yearly report organized by the Students’ Council was a day of great importance for the students and teachers of Greenslade School. The students were assigned roles and responsibilities and they took their job seriously. When it was time for Fernman to present his report on Physiology, the use of skeleton was a comic relief. He humourously concluded saying, “....basically all people were the same”. Through his dramatic presentation, Fernman was able to relieve the tension of the audience by providing a comical element. Thus, he brought comic relief in the Students’ Council Programme.

(2) Denham is one of the boys in Braithwaite’s class. He is particularly aggressive and bad-tempered. Braithwaite’s patience and tolerance transform Denham into a mature, young man who learns to respect others and takes up responsibility. This can be seen from his ability to host the Students’ Council report and supervise its proceedings. While hosting the Council, he refers to other senior girls as ‘miss’. He is a trained boxer and enjoys athletic activities. He does not want to do P.T. exercises which he feels are unnecessary for him. He is a natural leader, who enjoys influence over his classmates. Denham is clever, assertive and determined in his argument.

However, by the end of the trip, Fogg realizes the significance of human connection. In Passepartout, he finds a loyal and trustworthy friend and in Aouda, a wonderful and charming partner. (D) Answer the following questions in about 50 words : (4)

(1) Explain by citing references from ‘The Sign of Four’ the ways the series of actions move from London to India.
(2) Narrate the case of Miss Morstan in your words.

Answer: (1) The extract from ‘The Sign of Four’ begins when Mary Morstan meets sherlock Holmes at his house in London. She informed that her father was an officer in an Indian regiment who came back to London and disappeared after that. They meet Thaddeus Sholto in a rundown neighbourhood of London. He reveals few facts about his father Major Sholto and death of Mary’s father captain Morstan. Then they all go to Bartholomew Sholto’s house where he found dead. Holmes follows Jonathan small and Tonga, who have escaped by a steam launch, over the river Thames in London. After Small’s capture, he talks about the time spent in India and stealing the Agra treasure. Thus, the series of actions in ‘The Sign of Four’ move from London to India.

(2) Miss Mary Morstan appears early in the extract of ‘The Sign of Four’ and brings two mysteries to Sherlock Homes. The first is the puzzle of her missing father. Her father was an officer in an Indian regiment. In 1878, he obtained twelve months’ leave and came home. He telegraphed her from London and directed her to see him at the Langham Hotel. But she got the message that he had gone out the night before and never returned. The second is a series of strange gifts of beautiful pearls that she has received annually for the past six years since 1882.
