Flood Situation in the City
Mumbai, 5th March, 2015
Continuous rain for 48 hours has resulted in a severe flood situation in Mumbai. The city's large reservoirs, already at 90% capacity, filled to the brim due to the incessant rainfall on the 3rd and 4th of March. The water level was rising at a rate of one foot every ten hours. To prevent a widespread disaster, the dam gates were opened, allowing water to flow into the river. Naturally, the rivers widened, and their currents grew tremendously fast.
People living on the riverbanks were warned about the imminent danger and relocated to local municipal schools, hospitals, and marriage halls. Approximately 15,000 families were provided with temporary shelter. Food and essential supplies were distributed by various private companies and local firms. The situation for riverside apartments was equally shocking; in some cases, water reached the first floor. These residents were also evacuated to safer locations. The water level in the Dadar area rose to its highest recorded point. Fortunately, the flood situation was controlled through perfect planning and a managed release of water. As a preventative measure, officials are planning to construct more reservoirs in the near future.
