One Good Turn Deserves Another
When someone does a good deed for you, it should never be forgotten. On the contrary, you should look for an opportunity to do something good for that person or even for someone else. This latter concept is often called 'paying it forward.' Goodness must beget goodness. Only then will our world become a better place to live in.
Very often, people are so self-centered that they believe they are entitled to any kindness shown to them. Many behave this way and do not even have the courtesy to say 'thank you'.
I remember an incident when I was in my building's lift and the lights suddenly went out. I was terrified. An elderly gentleman in the lift with me calmed me down, assuring me not to worry and that the lift would restart in a few minutes. When the lift began working again, he kindly accompanied me to the door of my flat. I was grateful for his comforting presence and thanked him profusely. A few days later, I saw the same gentleman's grandchild playing near the parking lot. Suddenly, a car approached, and I could see the child was in danger. I ran, lifted the child, and moved him to safety. The elderly gentleman, who had helped me before, came over and thanked me. In that moment, I felt that my helpful act was simply returning the kindness he had already shown me.
There is a wonderful poem about a young man who helps an old woman cross a busy street. The woman blesses him for his kindness. At the end of the poem, the young man expresses a fond hope that someday, another young person will help his own aging mother when she is in need.
Indeed, one should never hesitate to do good for others.
For one good turn truly deserves another!
