Two
teachers whom I remember in particular are Mrs. Cynthia Nesamani and Sister
Monica, both taught me in school. The former, by and large, gave me a free rein
to do what I wanted to do. I, being one of those people who dislikes
instructions, she helped me to produce much better results than I'd have
otherwise done.
I
remember her asking us in the ninth standard to make globes for our geography
projects. A classmate, Ruchi Sanghvi,
and I slogged for endless hours to make one, and at the end of it, I remember
Mrs. Nesamani telling us that it wasn't
what she'd expected. For a moment, which seemed incredibly long, we were
crestfallen till she clarified that the standard of our project was only
expected from graduate students.
Sister
Monica, however, wasn't quite as lenient as that, and spent most of the time
telling me about the importance of regularity and hard work. She made me
realise that success is, like genius, 99 percent perspiration and 1 percent
inspiration. It's a lesson that has stood me in good stead.
