Blast furnace

  1. Blast furnace is 20 m to 40 m tall cylindrical furnace. It is used in the extraction of metals.
  2. The outer shell of the furnace is made up of steel plates and is lined from inside by about 0.4m thick fire bricks. It is a narrow at the top and the bottom.
  3. The mouth of the furnace has a cup and cone arrangement for feeding the ore. There is an outlet in the upper part of the furnace for hot waste gases.
  4. At the base of the furnace, there are two outlets; the upper outlet to remove the slag, and the lower outlet to remove the molten metal.
  5. At the highest level in the bottom part of the furnace are blow – pipes, through which hot air can be passed.
