- Blast furnace is 20 m to 40 m tall cylindrical furnace. It is used in the extraction of metals.
- The outer shell of the furnace is made up of steel plates and is lined from inside by about 0.4m thick fire bricks. It is a narrow at the top and the bottom.
- The mouth of the furnace has a cup and cone arrangement for feeding the ore. There is an outlet in the upper part of the furnace for hot waste gases.
- At the base of the furnace, there are two outlets; the upper outlet to remove the slag, and the lower outlet to remove the molten metal.
- At the highest level in the bottom part of the furnace are blow – pipes, through which hot air can be passed.
