Write a short note on – second generation computers.
Ans. The computers of the second generation: - We are initially characterised by either magnetic drum or magnetic core storage later on they used transistors in place of vacuum tubes the transistors being small in size occupied lesser space and power. They were less expensive and generated less heat as compared to the vacuum tubes. The computer became compact. These computers were also applied in other field such as scientific and mathematical application in addition to application in the fields of business and industry. The United states of America had more than 5000 computers. Some of the important second generation computers are IBM – 1620, IBM – 1401, IBM – 7094, CDC – 1604, CDC – 3600, RCA – 501 and UNIVAC – 1108 of these the most popular model of the second generation was IBM – 1401.
