III Answer any 4 questions. (4x5=20)

31. Explain two methods that you can use to measure the length of a curved line.

Method 1: Using a Thread

  1. Take a piece of thread and place a knot at one end.
  2. Place the knotted end at the beginning of the curved line.
  3. Carefully lay the thread along the curved line, ensuring it follows the path exactly.
  4. Mark the point on the thread where the curved line ends.
  5. Now, straighten the thread and measure the length from the knot to the marked point using a standard ruler. This length is the length of the curved line.

Method 2: Using a Divider

  1. Take a divider and open its two ends to a small, fixed distance (e.g., 1 cm).
  2. Place one tip of the divider at the starting point of the curved line and let the other tip fall on the line.
  3. Pivot the divider from the second tip and place the first tip further along the line. Repeat this process along the entire length.
  4. Count the number of "steps" taken by the divider.
  5. The length of the line is approximately the number of steps multiplied by the distance between the divider tips, plus the length of any remaining part measured with a ruler.

32. Give examples:-

  • a) Linear motion: An athlete running on a straight 100m track.
  • b) Curvilinear motion: A javelin thrown by an athlete.

33. Make a list of the functions of root and stem.

Functions of the Root:

  • Anchorage: It fixes the plant firmly in the soil.
  • Absorption: It absorbs water and essential minerals from the soil.
  • Storage: In some plants like carrots and beetroots, the root stores food.
  • Conduction: It transports the absorbed water and minerals upwards to the stem.

Functions of the Stem:

  • Support: It supports the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, holding them up to the sunlight.
  • Conduction: It transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves and other parts. It also transports food (prepared in the leaves) to all parts of the plant, including the roots.
  • Storage: Some stems, like potato and ginger, are modified to store food.
  • Photosynthesis: In some plants with green stems (like cacti), the stem also performs photosynthesis.

Stability is the ability of an object to maintain its original position and resist toppling over. An object is more stable if it has a wide base and a low centre of gravity.

III. Answer all the questions. 4x5=20

31. a) How will you determine the density of a stone using a measuring Jar?

To determine the density of a stone, we need to find its mass and volume.

  1. Find the Mass (m): Measure the mass of the stone using a physical balance. Let it be 'm' grams.
  2. Find the Volume (V):
    • Take a measuring jar and fill it partially with water. Note the initial volume of water (V₁).
    • Tie the stone with a thread and gently immerse it completely into the water.
    • The water level will rise. Note the final volume of water (V₂).
    • The volume of the stone is the difference between the final and initial readings: V = V₂ - V₁.
  3. Calculate Density (ρ): Use the formula:
    Density (ρ) = Mass (m) / Volume (V)
The unit of density will be g/cm³.

(or)

b) Explain the types of Stability with suitable examples?

There are three types of stability:

  1. Stable Equilibrium: An object is in stable equilibrium if it returns to its original position after being slightly displaced. This happens when its centre of gravity is at its lowest possible position.
Example: A book lying flat on a table.
  2. Unstable Equilibrium: An object is in unstable equilibrium if it does not return to its original position and topples over when slightly displaced. This happens when its centre of gravity is at its highest position.
Example: A cone balanced on its tip.
  3. Neutral Equilibrium: An object is in neutral equilibrium if it stays in the new position when displaced. Its centre of gravity remains at the same height.
Example: A ball rolling on a flat horizontal surface.

b) Draw the structure of an atom and explain the position of the sub-atomic particles.

(A diagram should be drawn showing a central nucleus with protons and neutrons, and electrons in orbits around it.)

Explanation of Structure and Position:

An atom consists of a central nucleus and electrons that revolve around the nucleus in specific paths called orbits or shells.

  • Protons (p⁺): These are positively charged particles. They are located inside the dense, central part of the atom called the nucleus.
  • Neutrons (n⁰): These are neutral particles with no charge. They are also located inside the nucleus along with the protons.
  • Electrons (e⁻): These are negatively charged particles. They are much lighter than protons and neutrons and revolve at high speed in specific orbits or shells around the nucleus.

Underground stems are modified stems that grow beneath the soil surface. They primarily function in food storage and vegetative propagation. The main types are:

  • Rhizome: A thick, horizontal underground stem with distinct nodes and internodes. It has scale leaves and buds. Example: Ginger, Turmeric.
  • Corm: A fleshy, spherical or flattened underground stem which is a condensed form of a rhizome. It stores food. Example: Colocasia.
  • Tuber: A swollen, fleshy tip of an underground stem branch that stores a large amount of food (starch). It has buds called 'eyes'. Example: Potato.
  • Bulb: A short, underground stem with fleshy scale leaves that store food. The stem is reduced to a disc-like structure. Example: Onion, Garlic.
