Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, was exiled and cast away to a deserted island with his young daughter, Miranda. For twelve years, they were the only human inhabitants, with only spirits for company. The chief of these spirits was Ariel, whom Prospero had freed from a curse. Using his magic, Prospero commanded Ariel to create a powerful storm to shipwreck a vessel carrying his enemies, including his usurping brother Antonio. The shipwreck brought Ferdinand, the Prince of Naples, to the island, where he and Miranda fell in love. Ariel, under Prospero's command, brought the other survivors to safety and made them realize their past mistakes. Seeing their repentance, Prospero's heart softened. He forgave them all, his dukedom was restored, and he prepared to return to Milan with his daughter and her new love.
