THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I HAVE MET
Outline: A ravishing kerala brunette – the day I saw her for the first time - her beauty - daughter and wife - her hobby - her enthusiasm – linguist traveller and poetess – her private motto - her tragic death in a car accident.
The most vivid memory of my early school days is a lady who ranks, by all odds, as the most interesting person I have met. She was in the full bloom of her beauty when I, as a child, first saw her. She was a ravishing Kerala brunette, who used to sit like a Maharani in the back seat of a 'Honda' motor car. As always, she provoked remarks. Everybody said excitedly, “There goes Mrs. Mary George”.
In those days Mrs. George, the wife of a famous Kerala doctor, was the leading society figure of that time. All kinds of people attended her lavish parties at the Oberois. The day I saw her she had been on her way out to the Oberois. She used to go there in the afternoon to play cards. She looked so very beautiful, that she could have given any of our film heroines a lesson in glamour.
However, even in her youth, Mrs. George was by no means a great beauty. She was quite plain-faced, but she had striking eyes and mouth and ravenblack hair. She had, in short, what is called in American English “the come hither look”. I am told several top local artists painted her portrait many times.
Mrs. George was born Mary John, daughter of a Kerala University professor. She came to Mumbai at the age of 21 in 1990 as the wife of Dr. Abraham George.
At her Pali Hill estate, she went in for gardening. Barefoot and holding her green sari, she spent hours growing plants and trees. She liked to do it because it felt good.
She was never too sophisticated but was very simple with tastes. Indeed, she liked to watch boxing bouts and tennis as well as art exhibitions and Indian dances.
Young Mrs. George travelled all over India. She was a linguist, who had mastered several South Indian languages, was well read and dabbled in Malayalam and Tamil.
Mrs. George had a private motto: "Be as happy as you can, but appear more so". And one great quality that she always practised was that she never spoke ill of others. But, unfortunately, her enthusiasm, her morals were attacked by some wicked people. What a pity, indeed!
Mrs. George, the most wonderful person I have ever known, got killed in a car accident near Ernakulam in Kerala. She died in the prime of her eventful and purposeful life. She was truly a young lady of whom any country would be justly proud!

शब्द की परिभाषा : सार्थक अक्षरों को, या सार्थक अक्षर समूह को शब्द कहते हैं। कभी एक ध्वनि से, कभी एक से अधिक ध्वनियों के योग से शब्द बनते हैं।

उपर्युक्त वाक्य में चार शब्द आए हुए हैं, व्याकरण की दृष्टि से इन शब्दों की जानकारी करे तो उनमें सहजता से भेद दिखाई देता है, जो इस प्रकार है :
(i) सूदन - व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा ।
(ii) अच्छा – गुणवाचक विशेषण ।
(iii) लड़का - जातिवाचक संज्ञा ।
(iv) है - क्रिया।
उपर्युक्त प्रत्येक शब्द अपने गुण, भाव तथा अर्थ की दृष्टि से अलग-अलग रूप के होते हैं।
अत: यही शब्द भेद कहलाता है।
शब्दों के दो भेद
विकारी शब्द (सव्यय)
→ संज्ञा →सर्वनाम → विशेषण →क्रिया
अविकारी शब्द (अव्यय)
→क्रियाविशेषण अव्यय → संबंधसूचक अव्यय → समुच्चयबोधक अव्यय → विस्मयादिबोधक अव्यय
(अ) विकारी शब्द (सव्यय) (Declinable Words)
परिभाषा : जिस शब्द में लिंग, वचन, पुरुष आदि के अनुसार परिवर्तन या बदलाव होता है, उसे विकारी शब्द कहते है।
उदा. लड़का-लड़की-लड़कियाँ ।
विकारी शब्द के चार भेद हैं, जो इस प्रकार हैं :
संज्ञा (Noun)
परिभाषा : जो शब्द व्यक्ति, वस्तु, जाति, स्थान, गुण या भाव आदि का नाम सूचित करता है, उसे संज्ञा कहते हैं।
उदा. (i) गंगा यह पवित्र नदी है।
(ii) ज्ञानेश्वर के पास एक पुस्तक है।

संज्ञा के पाँच भेद

(१) व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा (Proper Noun)
परिभाषा : जिस संज्ञा से किसी विशेष व्यक्ति, प्राणी, वस्तु या स्थान आदि के नाम का बोध होता है, उसे व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा कहते हैं।
उदा. (i) रामू यह गठरी देखना ।
(ii) हमने हिंदी में बातचीत की है।
(iii) ज्ञानबाबू के मुख पर विजय का आनद था।
(iv) जाली अल्सेशियन नस्ल का कुत्ता था ।
उपर्युक्त वाक्यों में रेखांकित शब्द किसी न किसी विशेष व्यक्ति, प्राणी या भाषा के नाम हैं। अत: वे व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञाएँ हैं।
(२) जातिवाचक संज्ञा (Common Noun)
परिभाषा : जिस संज्ञा से अपने पूरे वर्ग या पूरी जाति का बोध होता है, उसे जातिवाचक संज्ञा कहते हैं।
उदा. (i) नौकर बाहर गया है।
(ii) वहाँ एक अध्यापक बैठा हआ था।
(iii) पक्षी हवा में उड़ रहे हैं।
(iv) घोडा बेचारा कर ही क्या सकता था?
उपर्युक्त रेखांकित संज्ञाओं में से प्रत्येक संज्ञा अपने वर्ग या अपनी पूरी जाति को सूचित करती है, अत: ये जातिवाचक संज्ञाएँ हैं।
(३) भाववाचक संज्ञा (Abstract Noun)
परिभाषा : जिस संज्ञा से किसी वस्तु या व्यक्ति के गुण, भाव या दशा का बोध होता है, उसे भाववाचक संज्ञा कहते हैं।
उदा. (i) बुढ़ापे के कारण वह चल नहीं सकता
(ii) भगत जी को क्रोध आ गया ।
(iii) सूदन ईमानदारी से काम करता है ।
(iv) तू अभिमान करना छोड़ दे।
उपर्युक्त वाक्यों में रेखांकित शब्द किसी न किसी भाव, गुण, अवस्था का बोध कर रहे हैं। अत: ये भाववाचक संज्ञाएँ हैं ।
सूचना - भाववाचक संज्ञाओं का निर्माण मुख्यत: जातिवाचक संज्ञा, विशेषण तथा क्रियाओं में प्रत्यय लगाकर होता है।
जैसे - नौकर - नौकरी, लड़ना - लड़ाई, बच्चा - बचपन, लिखना - लिखाई आदि।

A MORNING WALK ALONG THE SEA-SHORE
Outline: Walking: necessary for health – morning walk: a pleasant pastime – pleasures of nature – rising sun - powerful influence of the wide expanse of the ocean.
I always go for a morning walk along the seashore. Morning walk is a very healthy exercise. There is nothing more bracing for the tired body and the dejected mind. This morning walk always refreshes my body and spirit. It is more conducive to health than any other form of exercise. I take a brisk walk after a night's rest before I go to school. It freshens and invigorates my mind so that I am able to apply myself to my studies with redoubled energy.
The morning walk that I take along the seashore is also a pleasant pastime. I set off from my home at an early hour in the morning. I forget all my cares and worries and feel as happy as a bird. The walk acts like a tonic to my mind.
I have a meditative turn of mind. As I saunter along the seashore, I enjoy the pleasures of an elevated nature. I sit down for some moments in a lonely corner and listen to the soft murmur of the waves. Soon the sunrise glows near the horizon. I contemplate the heavens overhead. I see all nature clothed in its finery. There is a freshness of beauty about the palm-studded seashore. These whispering palms give me a keen sense of enjoyment.
As I move up and down the seashore, I see the rising sun. It paints the distant skies with a hundred different hues. It is a lovely scene. The birds hidden from my view among the leaves and the branches of trees greet my ears with their musical notes. The contemplation of these beautiful sights of Nature produces a wholesome effect upon me. Sometimes it urges me to study Nature with the zeal of a bookworm.
The wide expanse of the ocean has a powerful influence on my imagination. It leads to those lofty thoughts, which a walk in the countryside fails to inspire. The calm and beautiful silence of the ocean, broken only by the never-ending murmur of the waves, stills my soul. It acts as a tranquiliser. The great ocean, with its thousand tongues, speaks to me. As I have a philosophic and poetic mind, I can understand its mysterious language. The influence, which the immensity of the ocean exerts on me, is so great that it is no wonder that millions of people offer their prayers to the Almighty, facing the sea.

ON STANDING IN A BUS STAND
Outline: I usually go to school in my neighbour's car – the neighbour went out of mumbai – I go in a happy mood to catch a bus – my experiences at the bus stand - queue - buses come and go, no admission - fight and chasing of a pickpocket - I take a cab in order to go to school.
I usually go to school in my neighbour's ramshackle old car. As such I am not subjected to the much-talked about rigours of a bus or train journey. However, the other day, my neighbour went out of Mumbai. I was left all alone to face the horrid experience of going to school by bus.
It was raining heavily. Even then I stepped out of my house with a very jaunty air. There was a light in my eye and a song on my lips : “Raindrops keep falling on my head”. I went to the bus stand in this happy mood, and lumbered up to the queue. It was a long one.
I waited and waited for the bus to come. It was almost like waiting for the Promised Land. Buses kept coming and going but the ravishing beauty at the head of the queue was still there, almost gummed to her spot. I dished out a little of my much-praised patience and waited.
By now, I came to know several people in the queue. They were all irritated. I tried to cheer them up a bit, but to no avail. Soon after this, I tried to while away the time by solving a crossword puzzle. In the meanwhile, one more bus arrived. The queue moved up fast and I was about to get in. But at that very moment a local goon jumped the queue and got in, and I was left out as the bus moved away.
Another bus came after 15 minutes. It was packed like sardines in a tin. I tried to get in but I was summarily pushed out by the hefty conductor. I just could not risk fighting the fellow. So I did not say a word and waited at the head of the queue.
The bus queue, by now, had become elephantine. Soon there was a fight. I saw a youngish fellow being manhandled by a mountain of a man. The former gave his adversary a couple of light blows and ran away. The big man shouted : “Pick-pocket! Pick-pocket“ The pick-pocket was seen running as fast as his legs could carry him, with some men chasing him. He climbed into a moving bus and disappeared.
By now I had made a big fool of myself. I had wasted a lot of my time for nothing. Now I would be late to school. I was scared of the comments that would be made by my class-teacher. Therefore, I hailed a passing cab and hopped in. I asked the cabbie to take me to the Podar School, Santa Cruz. The cab was soon speeding along at break-neck speed. Indeed, what an ironic situation! As a famous writer aptly remarks: “Patience and perseverance may overcome mountains, but they do not enable us to get our buses".

Outline: How I went to a restaurant – remarks on the waiters – boards on the wall - restaurants bring about true national integration.
Though I occasionally patronise the school canteen, I rarely visit a public restaurant. The other day as I was returning from school, all of a sudden the sky was overcast and a heavy downpour of rain followed. I was compelled to take refuge in an Irani restaurant, which was nearby. The place was terribly crowded, though I was lucky enough to get a seat. The rain was a boon to restaurants, I thought.
There were so many people and there was such a bustle and confusion that I had no hope of being attended to. To my great surprise, a waiter promptly came to me and asked what I wanted. I ordered a cup of tea which he brought in a jiffy. I marvelled at the alertness, promptness and efficiency of the waiters. They had a remarkable power of memory, since they would announce, in a stentorian voice, the exact bill of each customer. Yet, their job must be extremely drudgery and monotonous. How better, I thought, was the self-service system that was adopted in the school canteen!
As I was sipping my tea, my attention was drawn to the boards on the walls with maxims and instructions painted on them. I was amused by three boards placed in close proximity to each other. One proclaimed 'God is Great', the second proudly announced "Grade Two', and the third instructed 'Do not Spit'. Can there be a better example of incongruity. Incidentally, I was wondering whether the instruction on the third board was necessary when I remembered our national custom of chewing pan.
Looking around, I noticed that the majority of the customers preferred tea to anything else. Over their cups of tea some of them quietly read newspapers and some others discussed private affairs or public issues, while the rain pattered outside. The people sitting in the restaurant belonged to different communities and religions, and spoke different languages. Such restaurants, I reflected, brought about true national integration, and in them could be seen the secular ideal in operation. What our political leaders and legislators have been unable to achieve has been achieved by these restaurants. 'The cup that cheers but not inebriates.'
In the meanwhile the rain stopped and, having paid my bill, I left the restaurant.
