20) How does the poet bring about the comparison of life with the river? Explain it with reference to the poem.

The poet compares the journey of a river from its source to the sea with the stages of human life.
  • Childhood: The river begins as a sparkling, dancing stream, moving quickly over pebbles. This is similar to a playful, energetic, and innocent child.
  • Youth: As it grows, the river becomes a "brawling river," loud, fast, and impetuous. This reflects the passionate, ambitious, and sometimes reckless nature of a young adult.
  • Adulthood: In the middle of its course, the river becomes deep, broad, and calm, a "brimming river." This stage represents a mature adult who is in their prime—wise, steady, and purposeful.

First, she tried the 'water treatment', which involved waking him up early and dousing him with cold water in the woodshed, followed by wrapping him in wet sheets. When this failed to improve his melancholy, she moved on to hot baths, sitz baths, and shower baths. She also tried blister-plasters and a strict oatmeal diet. Her ultimate remedy was a potent medicine called "Pain-killer," which tasted like fire. Tom hated it so much that he cleverly fed it to the cat, which created chaos, finally making Aunt Polly realize that her 'cures' were more of a torment than a help for the boy.
