V. Answer the brief questions
1. What is the importance of the Governor of a state?
- The Governor is the constitutional head of the state executive.
- The administration of the state is carried on in the name of the Governor.
- The executive powers of the state are vested in the Governor.
- Each bill passed by the state legislature becomes law only with his signature.
2. What are the qualifications for the appointment of Governor?
- He should be a citizen of India.
- He must have completed 35 years of age.
- He should not be a member of Parliament or of any state legislature. If he is a member of any of the legislature, he automatically vacates his seat on assuming the office.
- He should not hold any other profitable occupation.
3. What is the original jurisdiction of the High Court?
- The High Court has original jurisdiction only in matters of admiralty, probate, matrimonial and contempt of court.
- It also has original jurisdiction over cases in which the amount involved is more than Rs. 2000 and in criminal cases which are committed to them by the Presidency Magistrates.
4. What do you understand by the “Appellate Jurisdiction” of the High Court?
- The High Courts entertain appeal in civil and criminal cases from subordinate courts as well as on their own.
- They have no jurisdiction over tribunals of armed forces.
