Paragraph Questions (Answers for Any Two)

20. Experience of the Young Seagull

In "His First Flight" by Liam O'Flaherty, the young seagull's experience is a journey from crippling fear to triumphant self-discovery. Initially, he is paralyzed by fear, watching his family fly while he remains alone on the ledge, convinced his wings won't support him. His parents try to encourage him, but his fear is too great. Maddened by hunger after a day of isolation, he watches his mother tear a piece of fish. She flies towards him with it, halting just out of reach. In a desperate attempt to get the food, the seagull dives, falls, and then, out of instinct and terror, flaps his wings. To his amazement, he finds himself flying. His fear vanishes, replaced by the joy of soaring through the air. He joins his family, who celebrate his success, and lands on the sea, completing his first successful flight.

22. Positive Aspects in 'Life'

The poem 'Life' by Henry Van Dyke is filled with positive ideals for living a meaningful existence. The poet advocates for a forward-looking attitude, urging us to "let me live my life from year to year, with forward face and unreluctant soul." He emphasizes the importance of not mourning for things that have disappeared from the past nor holding back in fear of what the future might hide. The journey of life, whether "up the hill or down, o'er rough or smooth," should be met with joy. The poet’s ultimate goal is to continue seeking the simple but profound treasures he valued as a boy: "new friendship, high adventure, and a crown." This optimistic and courageous approach to life's challenges and opportunities is the central positive message of the poem.

Subject: Non-functional streetlight causing inconvenience - reg.

Sir/Madam,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I wish to draw the attention of the concerned municipal authorities to a pressing issue in our locality. The streetlight on Bharathi Street in Gandhi Nagar (Pole No. B47) has not been functioning for the past three weeks.

This has plunged our entire street into darkness after sunset, making it extremely unsafe for residents, especially women, children, and the elderly. The darkness provides cover for anti-social elements and has led to a rise in minor thefts. Moreover, navigating the poorly maintained road in the dark is hazardous and has resulted in a few minor accidents.

Despite several complaints lodged with the local municipal office, no action has been taken so far. I kindly request you to highlight this problem in your newspaper so that the authorities are prompted to take immediate action and repair or replace the faulty streetlight.

Thank you.

Yours truly,
(Your Name)
A concerned resident.

28. Paragraph from Hints (Prospero)

The Story of Prospero

Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, was a man more interested in his books and magic than in ruling his state. Seeing this, his ambitious brother, Antonio, usurped his dukedom and cast Prospero and his young daughter, Miranda, out to sea. They survived and found refuge on a remote island. Years later, using his magical powers, Prospero creates a powerful storm that wrecks his enemies' ship on the island, bringing them under his control. Through a series of magical events, he tests their character, orchestrates the marriage of his daughter Miranda to Ferdinand, the son of his enemy, and ultimately forgives his brother. In the end, Prospero chooses forgiveness over revenge, breaks his magic staff, and is restored to his rightful dukedom in Milan.
