29. 'Achrekar was a sincere coach'. Substantiate.

Answer:

Ramakant Achrekar was a truly sincere and dedicated coach who played a pivotal role in shaping Sachin Tendulkar's career. His sincerity is evident in his strict discipline and foresight. He recognised Sachin's talent and was determined to nurture it. Achrekar Sir would make Sachin practice for hours, often placing a one-rupee coin on the stumps and challenging bowlers to dismiss him. If Sachin survived the session, the coin was his. This innovative method taught Sachin concentration and technique. He was also a strict disciplinarian. Once, when Sachin skipped his regular practice to watch an inter-school match, Achrekar Sir found him and sternly told him that he shouldn't be watching others play but should practice hard enough for others to come and watch him play. This incident shows his commitment to Sachin's future. His sincerity lay in his unwavering focus on making Sachin the best cricketer he could be.

30. Narrate in your own words about the hardships underwent by Sachin to become a great cricketer.

Answer:

Sachin Tendulkar's journey to becoming a cricketing legend was filled with immense hardships and sacrifices. As a young boy, his daily schedule was incredibly gruelling. He had to travel a long distance from his home in Bandra to Shivaji Park for practice, which meant changing buses and carrying his heavy cricket kit. The bus journeys were often crowded, and he felt embarrassed carrying his large kitbag. He had only one set of cricket clothes, which he had to wash himself every day after practice so he could wear them again the next day. His practice sessions were exhaustive, starting early in the morning and continuing late into the evening. After a full day of practice, he would be completely exhausted, but his commitment never wavered. These early struggles, including the physical strain and the lack of basic facilities, forged in him a mental toughness and a deep passion for the game that were crucial to his success.

31. How did Amy manage the situation at home?

Answer:

(Note: There is no major character named 'Amy' in the 9th Std syllabus. This might be a typo for 'Aunt Polly' from "The Cat and the Pain-killer".)

Assuming the question refers to Aunt Polly, she managed the situation with Tom Sawyer at home with a mixture of concern and comical remedies. When Tom started acting melancholy and uninterested in anything, Aunt Polly became worried. She believed he was ill and decided to "treat" him. Her management of the situation involved trying various popular but ineffective cures. She tried cold water baths, sitz baths, and shower baths. When these failed, she moved on to blister-plasters and a diet. Finally, she discovered a medicine called 'Pain-killer'. She administered it to Tom, who detested it but pretended to take it. Aunt Polly's way of managing the situation was to actively, though misguidedly, try to solve what she perceived as a problem, showing her deep, albeit sometimes exasperating, love for Tom.

32. Narrate the story of your visit to your ancestral house.

Answer:

Last summer, my family and I visited my ancestral house in a small, quiet village. The house, over a century old, stood proudly with its terracotta roof and large wooden pillars. As I stepped through the massive teakwood door, a wave of nostalgia hit me, even though I had only heard stories about this place. The air inside was cool and smelled of old wood, dust, and countless memories. We explored every room, from the large central courtyard that was open to the sky, to the dark storeroom filled with antique brass vessels and forgotten trinkets. My grandfather showed me the room where he was born and the old swing in the veranda where he spent his childhood. In the evening, sitting on the porch and listening to his stories, I felt a deep connection to my roots. That visit was more than just a trip; it was a journey back in time, allowing me to touch and feel the history of my family and understand where I came from.

PART - 2 (Answer any two) 2 x 5 = 10

33. What information does the poet highlight about the season and the time of the day in the poem?

Answer:

(From the poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening")

The poet, Robert Frost, clearly highlights that the season is winter. He does this through direct references to "snow" filling up the woods and the "frozen lake." The atmosphere is cold and quiet. The time of day is evening, specifically "the darkest evening of the year." This phrase suggests it might be the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. The overall setting created is one of solitude, darkness, and profound quietness, broken only by the gentle sounds of nature. This specific time and season contribute to the poem's contemplative and introspective mood.

34. How did the poet's anger with his friend end? Describe how his anger kept growing.

Answer:

(From the poem "A Poison Tree")

The poet's anger with his friend ended easily because he communicated his feelings. He "told his wrath," and as a result, the anger disappeared. In contrast, his anger with his foe kept growing because he suppressed it. Instead of expressing his anger, he nurtured it with negative emotions. He metaphorically "water'd it in fears, Night and morning with my tears" and "sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles." This means he fed his anger with his own anxiety and sadness while hiding it behind a fake, friendly exterior. This secrecy and deception caused the anger to grow into a metaphorical "poison tree," which eventually bore a poisonous fruit, leading to a destructive end for his foe.

35. He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake

Answer:

This stanza from "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" describes the reaction of the poet's horse and the profound silence of the woods. The horse, accustomed to continuous travel, is confused by the sudden, unexplained stop. It shakes its harness bells, as if to question the poet, asking if stopping in the middle of a dark, deserted wood is a mistake. This action from the horse highlights the unusual nature of the poet's pause. The stanza then emphasizes the deep quietness of the scene. Apart from the jingle of the harness bells, the only other sounds are the soft, gentle "sweep" of the wind and the light, fluffy snowflakes ("downy flake") falling. This description creates a powerful sense of peace, solitude, and immersion in nature.

PART - 3 1 X 5 = 5

36. Paraphrase the following lines.

40. Write a letter to your friend, describing the joy of celebrating festivals in a village.

Letter:

12, Green Valley,

Chennai.

15th October 2024.

My dear Arjun,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to share the wonderful experience I had last week. I visited my grandparents' village to celebrate Pongal, and it was truly unforgettable.

The joy of celebrating festivals in a village is something you can't find in the city. The entire village felt like one big family. The preparations started days in advance, with everyone cleaning and decorating their houses with kolams and mango leaves. On Pongal day, we all gathered in the common ground to cook sweet pongal in traditional earthen pots. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, folk music, and the cheerful cries of "Pongalo Pongal!". We also had traditional games like Uri-adi and bullock cart races. It was amazing to see so much community spirit and happiness.

I really wish you were there with me. The experience was so different from our quiet celebrations in the city. I have so many stories to tell you when we meet.

Convey my regards to your parents.

Yours lovingly,

Kavin

Answer (Option 1): The Story of the Honest Man and his Wicked Neighbour

Once there lived an honest old man and his wife who had a pet dog. One day, the dog led them to a spot in the garden where they found buried treasure under a pine tree. Their wicked neighbour, consumed by greed, borrowed the dog, hoping it would find treasure for him too. When the dog found nothing but filth, the wicked man killed it in a rage. The honest man, grieving, took the ashes of the pine tree under which the dog was buried. When he sprinkled the ashes on withered trees, they miraculously bloomed. The prince, hearing of this, rewarded him greatly. The wicked neighbour tried to do the same, but the ashes blew into the prince's eyes and ears. As a punishment for his cruelty and deceit, the wicked man was severely punished by the prince.

(OR)
Answer (Option 2): The Fun They Had

The story is set in the future and features two children, Margie, aged 11, and Tommy, aged 13. One day, Tommy finds a 'real book'—a physical book with printed paper pages—in his attic. It was about schools from centuries ago, from the time of their grandfather's grandfather. Margie was astonished because her teacher was a mechanical one, a large computer screen in her house. She hated her school. The book described the 'olden days' where the teacher was a human being, not a machine. In these old schools, all the kids of the same age from the neighbourhood went to a special building. They learned the same things together and could help each other with homework. Margie was fascinated by this idea. She imagined how much fun the children must have had, learning and playing together. She realized that those children truly enjoyed learning, unlike her lonely experience with the mechanical teacher.
