2y2 + 5y – 3 = 0

Comparing with ay² + by + c = 0 we have a = 2, b = 5, c = – 3

∆ = b² – 4ac

= (5)² – 4 (2) (– 3)

= 25 + 24

= 49

∴ ∆  > 0

Hence roots of the quadratic equation are real and unequal.
