- 1. The Capitalization Checklist:
👉 Always capitalize the first letter of a sentence.
👉 Always capitalize the pronoun 'I' whenever it stands alone.
👉 Capitalize Proper Nouns: Names of people (Holmes, Watson, Aditya, Sanyal), places (Chennai, France, Paris), days, months, and languages (English, Tamil).
👉 Capitalize the first word inside double quotation marks: He said, "We are ready."- 2. Direct Speech Quotation Rules:
👉 Always put a comma before opening quotation marks: Mother said, "Be careful."
👉 The terminal punctuation mark (full stop, comma, question mark, or exclamation mark) goes INSIDE the closing quotation marks: "Where are you going?" asked Ravi. (NOT "Where are you going"?)- 3. The Apostrophe (') Trap:
👉 Contractions (Short Forms): Put the apostrophe exactly where the missing letter was: don't, didn't, can't, won't, what's, it's, o'clock.
👉 Possession: boy's bag (singular), seagull's mother, Aditya's ancestral home.- 4. Question & Exclamation Precision:
👉 If the reported speech is an inquiry, end it with a question mark: "Can you hear me?"
👉 If it conveys sudden emotion or interjection, use an exclamation mark: "Alas!", "What a pity!"
