Clauses (Main & Subordinate): HSC 12th Board English Grammar PYQs
Welcome to a high-weightage grammar topic for your 12th Board Exams (HSC / ISC)! In the 12th grade, you are not only asked to separate the Main Clause from the Subordinate Clause, but you must also name the type of subordinate clause (Noun, Adjective, or Adverb). The biggest trap is confusing a Noun clause with an Adjective clause just because they both start with 'that'. Master our advanced cheat sheet below, practice the top 20 Previous Year Questions (PYQs), and challenge yourself with the interactive Self-Test!
🔥 Exam Tip & The Advanced Clause Cheat Sheet:
- Main Clause: Makes complete sense on its own. Has its own Subject and Verb.
- Subordinate Clause: Depends on the Main Clause. Starts with a binder (who, which, that, if, because, when, etc.).
- 1. Noun Clause (The 'What' Trick): Ask the question "What?" to the verb of the Main Clause. If the subordinate clause answers it, it is a Noun Clause.
Example: I know (what?) that he is smart. (Noun Clause).- 2. Adjective Clause (The 'Noun-Describing' Trick): It is placed IMMEDIATELY after a noun and describes that noun.
Example: The boy who is smart won the prize. ('who is smart' describes the noun 'boy' → Adjective Clause).- 3. Adverb Clause: Answers questions like When (Time), Where (Place), Why (Reason), How (Manner), or under what Condition (If/Unless).
Example: I will go if it rains. (Adverb Clause of Condition).
