Nomenclature Breakdown: Why "Benzoyl"?
The name Benzoyl chloride (C6H5COCl) is derived directly from its parent acid, Benzoic acid (C6H5COOH).
- When you remove the -OH group from Benzoic acid, the remaining C6H5CO- structure is called the Benzoyl group.
- Because the -OH is replaced by a Chlorine atom, the word chloride is added to the end.
⚠️ Common Student Mistake
Do not confuse Benzoyl with Benzyl!
• Benzoyl chloride: C6H5COCl (Contains a carbonyl group)
• Benzyl chloride: C6H5CH2Cl (Contains a methylene group)
