The last day of M. Hamel in school was a somber and emotional one. On that day, the school was unusually quiet and still. Little Franz, who was late, was surprised to find the old villagers occupying the back benches, a place that was always empty. They had come to thank M. Hamel for his forty years of faithful service and to show their respect for the country that was no longer theirs. M. Hamel was dressed in his fine Sunday clothes, which he wore only on inspection and prize days. He did not scold Franz for being late. Instead, he taught his last lesson in French with great patience and emotion, calling it the most beautiful language in the world. At the end of the lesson, overwhelmed with emotion, he could not speak. He turned to the blackboard and wrote as large as he could, "Vive La France!" (Long Live France!), and dismissed the class with a gesture of his hand.

The poet reminds us that we should not consider any person as strange or any country as foreign. This is because, underneath different kinds of clothes (uniforms), every human being is the same. The earth our fellow human beings walk on is the same as our own. Ultimately, we all will be buried in the same earth after our death. This stanza promotes the idea of universal brotherhood.
