Students from other schools are keen to learn about the methods we employed to make our Adult Literacy Program a grand success. This report explains how we prepared for and conducted the program.
Adult Literacy Program: A Grand Success
A Shibir at St. Agnes School
Nashik, January 19
The Adult Literacy Campaign conducted by St. Agnes School has been quite a hit. The brainchild of our Principal, Sr. Mary Kutti, the classes are attended by 200 men and women over the age of 40 each weekday evening. It began with the students of Standards IX and X making a survey of the town, which shortlisted almost 1,200 uneducated adults. Of these, 723 were women. Then, the motivation program began. Students would first visit homes to encourage the adults to participate. If this initial attempt failed, they would return accompanied by teachers.
It is heartening to note that while we currently have about 200 adult students, the emphasis remains on enrolling more. Funding for books and other materials comes from the sale of newspapers, old clothes, and similar items. Donations from parents and sponsors have also been a significant help. Classes are conducted from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the school premises. Different students take up teaching on different days. Sr. Mary Kutti has drawn up the syllabi to be taught, which essentially consists of the 'three R's' (Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic). There is no homework and no examination. The adult-students are also encouraged to share their own experiences. Teaching is done in the mother tongue.
At present, there are four classes: one each in Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, and Malayalam. May the noble efforts of all those involved in this laudable project be crowned with success.
