Fact File: Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake, an isolated creation of God, is nestled and perched cozily at a colossal height of around 17,800 feet (5,430 m) above sea level in North Sikkim, near the Tibetan (Chinese) border. It is one of the highest lakes in the world and India.

North Sikkim, India.

How to Get There

Air: Nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal (approx. 200 km to Gangtok). Pakyong Airport (PYG) in Sikkim is closer to Gangtok but has limited connectivity.

Rail: Nearest major railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal (approx. 190 km to Gangtok).

Road: From Gangtok, one needs to travel to Lachen (the base for Gurudongmar Lake visit, approx. 120 km from Gangtok, takes about 4-6 hours). From Lachen, Gurudongmar Lake is about 65-70 km (takes 3-4 hours). A protected area permit (PAP) is required for Indian tourists, and special permits through registered tour operators are needed. Foreign nationals are generally not permitted to Gurudongmar Lake itself but may be allowed up to Thangu Valley.

Where To Stay

Accommodation is available in Lachen, which serves as the overnight base. Options range from basic guesthouses to more comfortable hotels.

Gurudongmar Lake (the main attraction, revered as holy by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus), Thangu Valley (en route), Chopta Valley (nearby). The lake remains partly frozen even in peak summer.

Rail: Neral Junction is the nearest major station on the Mumbai-Pune line. From Neral, a narrow-gauge toy train chugs up to Matheran (check operational status). Alternatively, taxis are available from Neral to Dasturi Naka (the last point for vehicles).

Road: Cars and taxis go up to Dasturi Naka, about 2.5 km from Matheran center. From Dasturi Naka, one can walk, hire a horse, or take a hand-pulled rickshaw into Matheran.

Air: Nearest airports are Mumbai (approx. 90 km) and Pune (approx. 120 km).

Where to Stay

By Road: Well-connected by road to major cities like Delhi (approx. 350 kms), Chandigarh (approx. 115 kms). HRTC and private buses operate regularly.

By Air: Jubbarhatti Airport (approx. 22 km from Shimla) has limited connectivity. Chandigarh Airport is a more reliable option, followed by a road journey.

HISTORIC PLACES

Fact File: Hampi

Air: Bellary (BALL) is the nearest domestic airport (approx. 60-74 kms). Hubli (HBX) is another option (approx. 160 kms). Bangalore (BLR) is the nearest international airport (approx. 350 kms).

Rail: Hospet Junction (HPT) is the nearest railhead (approx. 13kms), well-connected to major cities.

Road: Hampi is approx. 350 kms from Bangalore. KSRTC buses and private services ply regularly to Hospet, from where Hampi is easily accessible by local transport.
