Q 4 Answer the following
(i) What is transliteration ?
Ans Transliteration is the conversion of Roman Characters to their phonetic equivalent in the local/selected language. It is not the same as translation, it is not the meaning but the sound of the word that is converted from one alphabet to the other. Google transliteration has integrated with Google dictionary which provides a convenient method to find out word meaning across languages. In order to use this function , highlight the word and click on the dictionary button. The word meaning will be shown by Google transliteration. If the highlighted word was in a local language, the dictionary will show the word meaning in English and if the highlighted word was in English , the dictionary will show the word meaning in the local language. To encode the local language character, the transliteration page uses Unicode which is a character coding scheme/system of representing letters and symbols in a standard way.
ii) Explain Google translate in detail.
Ans Google Translate uses state of the art technology and is a free automatic translator. Translation is currently possible into Hindi, Kannada, telugu, Tamil & Urdu. Translation of the words and phrases can be done by selecting translation languages and start typing. The translation result will appear immediately as we type without touching a single button. In order to take advantage of instant translation feature, one needs to enable javascript. When we translate to a non –Roman script, we will have to click on the link ‘Read phonetically’ which can be seen next to the translation and this link will spell out the translation in Roman characters. Currently this feature is available only in Hindi out of Indian languages. Similarly , we can see a speaker button near the translated text for many languages and this feature is also currently available to only Hindi in India. To type any language, a special layout for that particular script is required. While translating from Hindi, Urdu, Russian, Greek etc you can see an ‘Allow Phonetic typing’ check box near the input area which allows you to type these languages as they sounf in English and the moment you hit the ‘SPACE’ button, the word will be converted to the selected script and the translation will be displayed. It is possible to translate an entire web page directly from Google translate. To do this enter its address into the input box and click ‘Translate’. It is possible to translate whole documents easily with Google translate without doing copy & paste by simply clicking the ‘Translate a document’ link and submit the files as PDF, TXT , DOC , PPT etc.
