Write an account on dairy farming in Punjab – Haryana Plain.


Ans.

i. Cattle and dairy products are very important in Punjab Haryana plain.

ii. Haryana breed of bulls and Murrah breed of buffaloes are famous in the semi – arid southwestern districts.

iii. Cattle and buffalo breeding is a subsidiary occupation of the farmers. Amritsar is the leading centre of fresh milk collection, and it supplies milk to Chandigarh and Shimla.

iv. Modern dairy industries for producing milk products have recently been set up in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Rohtak districts.

Explain the climate of Punjab – Haryana Plain.


Ans.

i. The Punjab – Haryana Plain has a monsoon type climate, with dry cold winters and hot summers.

ii. the climate is characterized by extreme hot and extreme cold conditions.

iii. Annual temperature in the plain range from 20C to 400 C. May and June are characterized by hot and dry winds, locally known as 'loo'. These 'loo' are followed by dust winds and occasional showers.

iv. Rainfall decreased from about 950 mm near the Shiwalik range to 330 mm along the Rajasthan desert.


v. The annual rainfall varies from 950 mm. in Ambala to 460 mm in Hissar. Most of the rainfall occurs in the months of July to September. Some amount of rainfall is received in winter between December and March because of western depressions. It proves useful for Rabi crops.

The Islands

There are two groups of Islands


(a) The Arabian sea Islands and (b) Bay of Bengal islands.

(a) The Arabian Sea Islands

i. Lakshadweep, Minicoy and Amindivi islands are a group of islands in the Arabian Sea. 

ii. These are located 200 to 440 km off the southwester coast of India. 

iii. These islands form the smallest Union Territory if India. 

iv. Their total surface area is 32 sq. km. 

v. Kavaratti is the capital of this Union Territory.


(b) Bay of Bengal Islands

i. The North Andaman Islands are physically characterized by a central range and a number of narrow valleys. The Little Andaman is almost flat except a northern hilly tract. 

ii. The Nicobars, forming the summit of the submarine mountain range, are hilly in character. The surface has been highly cup up by small streams. The depressions are filled up to form alluvial plains.
